What Is Contribute?

At WRTN, we want all writers to have a publisher. That's what Contribute is, our doors opening to anyone who wants to be on our site, no strings attached, letting it become "The Home of Everything Written." Content MUST adhere to our guidelines.

Why To Contribute?

Contribute is a great way to put you out as a writer. Publishing can be a milestone in a longer journey, as others watch you grow AS you grow. It's a marker of where you've come from and where you'll go, and helps preserve the art of authentic writing.

How To Contribute?

There are two ways to Contribute: by form or by email. If done via email, additional information may be requested.

Introduction

Here at WRTN, there obviously needs to be rules around what is put on our site. So, we have compiled some of the basic ones surrounding our content, each of which MUST be followed for your content to be released on our platform.
Note - Guidelines can be changed at any time, though content released before any alterations will be kept as is. It will only apply to new content.

Rule 1 - Profit

WRTN can't ever and won't ever make any monetary profit from your work, and allows any creator who wants their work to be removed to have that request met within 24 hours of the initial ask.
Our site is not something for profit, is not a place where money is made, and the plan is to keep it that way. The ONLY possible outlet for income would come from premium content exclusively made for those subscribers by our team, or via donations, which would go directly back into WRTN, nowhere else.

Rule 2 - Content Edits/Removals

As mentioned previously, if for any reason at all you want your work, whether all of it or a specific piece, changed or removed from WRTN, that request is promised to be delivered in 24 hours or less unless specifically noted otherwise.
As an author, you will ALWAYS have ultimate control over your work on WRTN, no matter what. That ideal is paramount to our mission of creating a home for all writers, so know that whatever the reason may be, you can make changes to it. It is YOUR work; YOU are in control of it, of how it succeeds, of who sees it, of who doesn't. Just because it is on WRTN does not take away from it being YOURS!
WRTN is also permitted to deny/remove ANY content for the reasons supplied in our guidelines, regardless of author requests.

Rule 3 - Profanity/Mature Content

There is honestly a fairly high tolerance for profane content on WRTN, but there are definitely limits. Voiding these for any reason is cause for content denial and/or removal. Here are our rules:
  • No slurs. Any content with such will have some of the letters replaced with "—" or be refused publishing.
  • Up to one "F—k" per 3,000 words.
  • Up to two "S—t" per 750 words.
  • Up to two "B—h" or "B—d" per 500 words.
  • Up to one "Hell," "Damn," "Ass," or other low-level swears per 100 words.
  • No pornographic material of any kind.
  • No hate speech, which includes racist, sexist, ableist, homophobic, or other discriminatory material. Content can and will be denied for this reason alone.
  • Descriptively graphic material is allowed, but under the pretense of a content warning beforehand. This can include but not is limited to scenes that are bloody, violent, have high usage of drugs/alcohol, or accurately depict events like wars, protests, accidents, etc. If your piece seems to violate/cross these lines, you will be asked to either review and resubmit or be denied publishing.

Ultimately, think about it like a film. There is PG, PG-13, and R-rated content, and WRTN plays into those rules a bit. As long as your work is not INTENDED to be one of the most heinous pieces in human history, it will likely be accepted. But understand that there are limits, that there is necessary censorship to keep our platform open to all, and we will apply them when needed.

Rule 4 - Changes by Our Editors

If you request it, we can have your content reviewed and changed by our editors before release to ensure that it is properly worded. By default, we always put it through spell and profanity checks, but if you ask, we will have our team specifically go in and adjust pieces as needed to better help send your message. Every change will need to be confirmed by you before it is published, but this is a great way to make sure your work is the best possible before it is released on our platform. Though, as always, you can opt out of it, as it is ultimately YOUR work!

Rule 5 - Sources

Especially on the News and Essays pages, sources are a necessity for the best possible content to be released. If possible, we heavily recommend including them in all your work, as it ensures that what you've created properly credits where the information is from.
All citations and sources for essays must be in MLA format. If your work does not follow that, then it can either be edited by you or our team. Articles only need sourcing in said style.

Conclusion

Following each of these rules along with basic common sense are what is required for your content to be published on WRTN. Though do note that these rules are not here to squander creativity, to crush any dreams, but to make it apparent that there is a threshold that needs to be met before you can be a contributor to our site. Nothing is arbitrary, everything is within reason, and it can be debated for the rest of human history if censorship of any kind is acceptable. But understand that if you really want your work to be seen, to be read, to be enjoyed, then some basic rules may need to be layered over it. Hopefully, that is a reasonable caveat.
